Department of Gastroenterology & Digestive Diseases

Overview

    The Department of Gastroenterology evolved as a state-of-the-art Center for Liver and Digestive Diseases (CLD) located in the new Holy Family Hospital Rawalpindi building with a covered area of 10,000 sq. ft. The only public sector facility in Northern Punjab is also facilitating patients from KPK, AJK, GB, and Islamabad by providing them easy access to procedures like ERCP, EUS, Manometry, RFA, Fibro scans, therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopies. The department is a teaching center with FCPS and MD training and also hosts the largest number of workshops in a calendar year for hands-on training of faculty as well as fellows. The department is also well-equipped with a skill lab and also provides a hub for the training of undergrads, postgrads, technicians and nursing staff.

Postgraduate Programs

FCPS (Gastroenterology)

The FCPS program is a rigorous four-year structured training designed according to CPSP guidelines. Residents receive comprehensive exposure to clinical gastroenterology, hepatology, and endoscopic procedures, including

  • Diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopies
  • ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography)
  • Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)
  • Manometry and pH studies
  • Liver disease management including viral hepatitis and cirrhosis
  • GI oncology, IBD, celiac disease, pancreatitis, and motility disorders

The department is equipped with state-of-the-art endoscopy suites and manometry labs and maintains strict adherence to evidence-based protocols. Senior consultants supervise training, and regular assessments, journal clubs, and workshops ensure continual learning and preparation for the FCPS exit exam.

MD Gastroenterology

The MD Gastroenterology program is a five-year structured training program under UHS guidelines. The curriculum focuses on both academic and practical excellence and includes:

  • In-depth knowledge of gastroenterological disorders
  • Hands-on procedural skills including diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy
  • Exposure to hepatology, GI emergencies, and intensive care
  • Research methodology and thesis submission
  • Rotations in radiology, pathology, and surgery to build a multidisciplinary approach

Residents undergo formative and summative assessments including annual theory and clinical exams. RMU provides academic mentoring, access to digital libraries, and opportunities for national and international research presentations.
