Department of Gynae & Obs Unit I HFH

      Rawalpindi Medical University (RMU) is a distinguished non-profit public sector institution located in Rawalpindi, Punjab, recognized by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC). With an enrollment of approximately 3,000–3,999 students, RMU is a small-sized coeducational medical university, serving a population of 1 to 5 million, as per uniRank. The university is affiliated with three prominent hospitals: Holy Family Hospital, Benazir Bhutto Hospital, and Rawalpindi Teaching Hospital.
     The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Holy Family Hospital comprises of two units. Gynae Unit-I is led by Dean Prof. Dr. Tallat Farkhanda, which is a 103 bedded unit, with 46,053 patients seen in OPD, 16,469 patients seen in Gynae emergency and 7,416 maternities were conducted in year 2024 as per audit records and serves as a referral center for complex cases from regions including Chakwal, Murree, Attock, Sargodha, Mianwali, and Azad Kashmir (Bagh).

 

Comprehensive Care and Services

    The department specializes in high-risk obstetric emergencies and critical referrals. Its gynecological services include subfertility management, urogynecology, gynecological oncology, and minimally invasive surgery. A strong emphasis is placed on preventive medicine and patient healthcare education

Education and Training

 The department plays a pivotal role in the education and training of medical students, postgraduate residents, and paramedical staff. Recognized by the PMDC, HEC, and CPSP for training MS, FCPS, MRCOG and DGO trainees, the department employs various teaching methodologies, including:

  • Large Group Interactive Sessions (LGIS)
  • Small Group Discussions (SGDs)
  • Self-Directed Learning (SDL)
  • Workshops
  • Clinical rotations
  • Bedside teaching

Academic Activities

     For postgraduate residents, regular academic activities include:

    • Morning meetings
    • Topic presentations
    • Case discussions
    • Maternal and perinatal mortality meetings
    • Journal clubs
    • Monthly audits
    • Hands-on skill sessions
    • Multidisciplinary meetings (MDMs)

     Formative assessments are conducted through monthly tests, 360-degree evaluations, and Workplace-Based Assessments (WPBA). Residents gain comprehensive clinical exposure by rotating through departments such as Medicine, Surgery, Urology, Radiology, and Pediatrics. Additionally, residents enhance their digital literacy skills by spending one month in the professor’s office, learning directly from senior faculty. Continuous professional development is emphasized for junior consultants and senior registrars.

Research and Outreach

    The department is actively involved in innovative research aimed at enhancing patient care. Research topics undergo a structured approval process and faculty members participate in various research initiatives, including the Faculty Research Forum (FRF) and Resident Research Forum (RRF).

     The department also participates in outreach programs, including medical duties at Adyala Jail and TB Samli Sanatorium Hospital, Murree. It manages various administrative responsibilities, such as overseeing maternal mortality meetings, infection control, and pharmacovigilance. Faculty members contribute to hospital administration by participating in committees, e.g; hospital mortality committee, equipment purchase committee, student counselling committee. They are also serving as supervisors and examiners for various medical programs.

University Initiatives

     The faculty spearheads various university and national initiatives, e.g; Gynaecological Oncology Clinic, member of Board of advanced studies and research (BASR), Punjab Thalassemia program. They organize faculty development workshops and oversee student extracurricular activities, e.g; member of students’sports committee, RMU Girls’ hostel warden. Faculty members actively participate in national and international conferences, including SOGP, Menopause Society, PUGA Society, IRC RCOG summit, RCOG, and FIGO.
