The RMU Flood Relief Program is a dedicated initiative launched by Rawalpindi Medical University to support communities affected by recent flooding across Pakistan. Driven by the university’s students, faculty, and administration, the program aims to provide immediate humanitarian assistance, including medical services, emergency supplies, and on-ground volunteer support in the hardest-hit areas. In addition to addressing urgent health and safety needs, the program seeks to raise awareness, mobilize resources, and coordinate with local authorities and NGOs to ensure an effective and sustained response to the disaster.
Universities are not only centers for creating and disseminating knowledge but also play a crucial role in nation-building, preparing future generations for challenges, and aligning them with global vision. In addition, universities must stand by their people and government during times of national disaster.
Recognizing this responsibility, Rawalpindi Medical University (RMU) established the RMU Disaster Relief Cell, chaired by the Vice Chancellor RMU, and implemented by a dedicated team of volunteers. Every effort of this mission has been financed through donations.
In the 2023 Flood Relief Program, RMU was honored with a Best Performance Certificate, Alhamdulillah.
In 2025, when Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) was among the worst-hit provinces, RMU once again rose to the occasion. RMU launched its first multipurpose relief camp in Buner (Village Kodca).
On the directions of Vice Chancellor RMU, Professor Dr. Muhammad Umar (SI, HI), Rawalpindi Medical University organized flood relief medical camps in Buner District.
A medical camp was successfully conducted in the Koz Gokand area of Buner, where a team of RMU doctors provided medical services to more than 400 patients.
This camp was especially significant as the area is located at a far distance from standard health facilities (both government and private), leaving the local population with limited access to healthcare.
The RMU team ensured the provision of essential medical care, medicines, and health guidance in this underserved region.
The initiative has been highly appreciated by the local community, with residents acknowledging that RMU doctors were the first to reach areas that had not yet been served by any other teams.
Looking ahead, another medical camp is scheduled for 24th August 2025, targeting one of the areas most severely affected by the recent floods, ensuring continuity of care and wider outreach.
RMU Flood Relief Program 2025
In August 2025, Pakistan experienced devastating floods triggered by intense monsoon rains and rare cloudbursts, particularly in the mountainous regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Districts such as Buner were hit hardest, with torrents of water and debris sweeping away entire villages within minutes and leaving hundreds dead or missing. Urban areas like Karachi also suffered severe flooding after recording some of the heaviest rainfall in decades, causing major disruptions to infrastructure and daily life. In total, more than 300 people were killed in mid-August alone, and the nationwide monsoon death toll since late June climbed above 695. Authorities deployed military and emergency teams to conduct search-and-rescue operations, restore electricity, and deliver urgently needed supplies. The floods highlighted the growing vulnerability of Pakistan to climate-related extremes, exacerbated by deforestation, poor infrastructure, and insufficient early-warning systems.
The recent floods in District Buner, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, have caused widespread displacement, damage to infrastructure, and significant health concerns. Major affected areas include:
